Robinson R44 vs R66: Which Should You Buy?

APEX HELICOPTERS, AUTHORIZED ROBINSON DEALER & SERVICE CENTER

The R44 is Robinson’s piston workhorse, four seats, piston maintenance, cheaper to buy and run with 10% more hours. The R66 is the turbine step up, five seats, more useful load, turbine maintenance, and stronger hot-and-high performance, at a higher purchase and operating cost. The right answer is the one that fits your mission and budget, and APEX sells and services both.

R44 vs R66: what is the core difference?

Engine. The R44 runs a piston Lycoming IO-540 or O-540 on 100LL avgas; the R66 runs a Rolls-Royce RR300 turbine on Jet-A. That single choice cascades into seats (four vs five), useful load, performance at altitude, maintenance, fuel cost, and price. Everything below follows from piston versus turbine.

Which carries more, seats, load, and cabin?

The R66. It adds a fifth seat, more useful load, a wider cabin, and a dedicated baggage compartment, which is why it suits families, charter, and load-carrying work. The R44 carries four and does most private, training and sightseeing missions comfortably. Exact figures are on the R44 and R66 model pages.

How do operating costs compare?

The R44 is cheaper to operate, simpler piston maintenance and bills. The R66 turbine costs more per hour but returns performance and smoothness for it. Both carry an overhaul reserve, on slightly different clocks (2,200 hours for the R44, 2,000 for the R66). See the honest hourly breakdown in the R44 operating-cost guide.

How do purchase prices compare?

The R66 costs more than the R44, new and used, it is a turbine. How much more moves with the market and the spec; compare current figures in the R44 price guide.

What about insurance and resale?

Turbine aircraft and higher hull values generally mean higher premiums, and the R66 asks for turbine-time and transition training that affect a new owner’s rate. Both models hold value well in a strong Robinson market; the R66 trades in the turbine pool, the R44 in the deepest piston market in the world.

Which should you buy?

Choose the R44 for training, tighter budgets, and most private flying. Choose the R66 when you need the fifth seat, more useful load, altitude performance, or turbine reliability. Many owners start on an R44 and move up, you can put yours toward an R66 through an APEX trade-in or the factory trade-in program. Compare both against stock in the inventory.

Questions, answered

Is the R66 worth the extra cost over the R44?

If your mission needs the fifth seat, more useful load, altitude performance, or turbine smoothness, yes. If you fly mostly private or training trips on a budget, the R44 delivers the same Robinson reliability for less to buy and run.

Which is cheaper to operate, the R44 or the R66?

The R44. It burns avgas rather than Jet-A and its piston maintenance is simpler, so the hourly cost is lower. The R66 trades a higher hourly cost for turbine performance. See the R44 operating-cost guide for the breakdown.

Can I trade my R44 toward an R66?

Yes. Put your R44 toward a newer R66 through an APEX dealer trade-in, keep flying while you order, or through Robinson’s factory trade-in program. We run both and lay out the numbers on each.
