Robinson R44 Raven I vs Raven II: What’s the Difference?

Both are four-seat R44s on the same airframe and the same 2,200-hour / 12-year overhaul limit. The difference is the engine: the Raven I runs a carbureted Lycoming O-540; the Raven II runs a fuel-injected IO-540 with more power and stronger performance when it is hot or high. The Raven I costs less; the Raven II carries and climbs better.
Raven I vs Raven II: the core difference
Fuel delivery. The Raven I is carbureted; the Raven II is fuel-injected. Injection adds power, smooths starting and altitude operation, and removes carburetor icing from the list of things a pilot manages. Everything else, cabin, four seats, the airframe, is essentially the same R44.
How does performance differ?
The Raven II makes more power, which shows up as better hot-and-high performance and more useful load on a demanding day. The Raven I is perfectly capable in temperate conditions and at lower density altitudes; it just has less margin when the temperature and elevation climb.
What about carburetor ice?
It is a Raven I consideration, not a Raven II one. A carbureted engine can form carburetor ice in the wrong conditions, so the Raven I pilot manages carb heat. The Raven II’s fuel injection has no carburetor and no carb ice to manage.
How do prices compare?
