Helicopter Salvage & Recovery: Bringing a Downed Robinson Home

Helicopter salvage and recovery is the work of getting a downed aircraft off the ground and back to a shop, safely, and without making the damage worse. When a Robinson crashes, lands off-airport, or is repossessed, APEX recovers it: road-transport to Fort Lauderdale (FXE) or Danbury (DXR), assess the damage, and store, broker, or part it out, one shop, start to finish.

What is helicopter salvage and recovery?

Two different things share the word "salvage." One is aerial salvage, using a heavy-lift helicopter to sling cargo, vehicles, or boats out of difficult places. That is not what APEX does. We recover the helicopter itself: the crashed, damaged, stranded, or repossessed airframe is the thing being retrieved, assessed, and returned to service or written off.

Why does it matter who recovers your helicopter?

Because the wrong lift point turns a repairable airframe into a total loss. A Robinson can only be jacked, slung, and hoisted at the points the factory designed for it. Rig the tailcone, or the rotor mast and you may bend structure the accident left intact. An authorized dealer and service center knows those points, a general crane or forklift operator does not. What happens after the recovery?

The aircraft comes back to the hangar for an evaluation and a straight answer: repair, part-out, or total. Salvage aircraft go into secure storage until the owner or adjuster decides. What does a helicopter recovery cost?

It depends on where the aircraft is, how it sits, and how much disassembly the site demands. Most recoveries are insurance jobs; we document condition first and coordinate directly with the adjuster so salvage value is protected. Start with the AOG line.
